Upper Dolpo Trekking

Upper Dolpo Trekking is the mystical land with remote and hidden valleys with wonderful mountain sight and prehistoric existence of traditional Tibetan culture. It is also one of the highest settles on earth with spotted castle-like villages, monasteries nestling mountains of stark and moderate beauty. Dolpo is a ‘Bon Po’ Buddhist land where people practice shamanism which is the opposite implementation of original Buddhist Philosophy.

In the chant of Buddhist mantra “om ma ni pad me hum”, Bon Po Buddhist chant “om ma tri mu ye sa le du”, in Tibetan means ‘in clarity unite’.

Shey Phoksundo National park protects the Dolpo region. It lies on the north of Dhaulagiri Himalaya Range in the border of Tibet. Upper Dolpo trek Nepal is a reminiscent journey to rugged mountain hills, walled villages, Tibetan Monasteries with alpine valleys, engraved gorges, snowy passes and a similar kind of Tibetan land. In the book of ‘The Snow Leopard’, Peter Matheson explains his journey through the attractive land of Dolpo. The Oscar-nominated ‘Himalaya’ or ‘Caravan’ was also filmed here. It is also one of the restricted areas of trekking destinations. It’s requiring a special Upper Dolpo Trek permit of USD 500 per person for the first 10 days. And an additional USD 50 each day after ten days. The clients must be two people to get a special trekking permit for Upper Dolpo.

We Begin our trekking from Jhupal after having 35 minutes scenic flight from Nepalgunj. Then the trail continues to Chhepka heading north along with Shey Phoksundo National Park. Exploring the vicinity of Phoksundo Lake and Buddhist monastery in Ringmo. Then we continue our trekking with valleys and rocky hills of Shey Gompa. We cross many dense forests, rocky hills.  And traditional villages of Namgung, Saldang, Sibu, Dho Tarap, and finally, the trail go back to Jhupal.
