POKALDE PEAK & KHONGMA TSE PEAK (5,806 M)

This relatively undistinguished peak is the culmination of a rocky, pinnacled ridge beyond the huge lateral moraines of Pheriche. In many ways it can be regarded as the final bony knuckle on the long fingered ridge that extends southwards from Nuptse, bounding the east bank of the Khumbu Glacier.

To the Sherpas Pokalde is immensely important. The home of major deity, it is the object of a monsoon pilgrimage during which the devout perambulate clockwise around the mountain.

The route from the east is quick and straight – forward and was probably pioneered by Sherpas to place prayer flags on the summit. The first Western ascent was recorded in 1953 by a group from the Everest Expedition that included John Hunt, Wilfred Noyce, Tom Bourdillon and Mike Ward. They climbed the north ridge direct from the Kongma La. “ A jolly ridge, in the Alpine sense,” wrote Noyce later, using it as a fine viewpoint for studying the surrounding giants. Everest and Makalu rear above the clouds like two great canine teeth: “Fangs excrescent”, to use Malory’s phrase, “gaunt and yellowy – Brown.”

Pokalde is best approached from the lodges of Lobuche and can be climbed in a day. A well- marked trail leads across the Khumbu Glacier and climbs to the pass in about three hours. The cluster of tiny lakes on the east side provides an ideal high camp.
